Possible Causes
Grease fire in cook chamber, Excessive pellet feed causing runaway temperature, RTD probe positioned too close to fire pot, Control board miscalibration
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If you suspect a grease fire, do not open the lid fully. Turn OFF the grill, unplug it, and keep the lid closed to starve the fire of oxygen. Have a Class B fire extinguisher ready. Never use water on a grease fire.
Steps after safe cooldown:
- Inspect interior: Once completely cool, open the lid and inspect for signs of grease flare-up (heavy soot, charred grease).
- Deep clean: Remove grates, drip tray, and heat diffuser. Scrape and clean all grease channels, drip tray, and the bottom of the cook chamber. Empty and clean the grease bucket.
- Check pellet feed: Ensure the auger is not overfeeding due to incorrect settings or a stuck relay. Observe a startup cycle to confirm normal pellet delivery.
- Probe placement: Verify the RTD probe is correctly mounted in its factory location and not bent toward the fire pot.
- Restart: After cleaning, run the grill at a moderate temperature and monitor. If over-temp faults recur without visible cause, the control board or probe may require replacement.
