Possible Causes

RTD probe wires shorted together, Moisture intrusion in RTD connector, Melted RTD cable insulation from contact with hot surfaces, Failed RTD probe element

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF and unplug the grill. Let it cool completely.

  • Inspect the RTD cable path: Follow the RTD probe wire from the cook chamber to the control board. Ensure it is not touching the fire pot, exhaust, or any sharp metal edges. Look for melted or crushed sections.
  • Check for moisture: Open the control panel area and inspect the RTD connector for water, grease, or corrosion. Dry the area thoroughly and clean light corrosion with electrical contact cleaner.
  • Test resistance: With the RTD unplugged from the board, measure resistance across the two leads. A reading near 0 ohms indicates a short. Flex the cable gently while measuring; if the reading jumps, the cable is internally damaged.
  • Correct routing: If the cable was routed against hot parts, reroute it along the factory path using high‑temp zip ties and existing clips.
  • Replace the RTD probe if shorted: Remove the probe from the cook chamber wall, pull the cable out, and install a new Nexgrill RTD probe harness. Ensure the grommet seals the chamber wall to prevent smoke and moisture leaks.
  • Power up and verify: Reconnect power and turn the grill on. Confirm that Er2 is cleared and that ambient temperature is displayed reasonably. Run a short preheat to verify stable readings.
