Possible Causes

Burned out hot rod igniter, Loose igniter wiring at control board, Failed igniter relay on main control board, Excess ash blocking airflow around igniter

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the grill and ensure the fire pot is cool and free of active embers.

  • Inspect the fire pot: Remove cooking grates and heat diffuser/heat baffle to expose the fire pot. Vacuum out ash and pellets. Ensure the igniter hole in the side or bottom of the fire pot is not blocked.
  • Check igniter wiring: Access the underside or rear of the grill where the igniter rod plugs into the wiring harness. Confirm the connector is fully seated and wires are not burned or pinched.
  • Test igniter operation: With the fire pot empty, plug the grill in and start an ignition cycle while observing the igniter area (do not touch). Within a few minutes, you should see a red/orange glow from the igniter. If there is no glow, unplug the grill and proceed to replacement.
  • Replace the hot rod igniter: Remove the mounting screw(s) securing the igniter to the fire pot or burn tube. Gently pull the igniter out, noting the routing of the wire. Install a new Nexgrill hot rod igniter of the same type, route the wire away from direct flame, and secure with the original hardware.
  • Check control board (if new igniter does not heat): If a known‑good igniter does not glow, the igniter circuit on the main control board may have failed. Inspect the board for burnt spots and consider replacing the Nexgrill control board assembly.
  • Reassemble and test: Reinstall the heat diffuser and grates, prime the auger with pellets if needed, and run a startup. Confirm that pellets ignite within 5–8 minutes and Er3 does not reappear.
