Possible Causes

Damaged RTD temperature probe wire, Disconnected RTD sensor plug at control board, Failed RTD temperature probe, Corroded RTD connector

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the pellet grill from power and allow it to cool completely before opening any panels.

Steps to check and fix:

  • Locate the RTD temperature probe (usually a metal probe inside the cook chamber on the left or right wall, wired back to the control panel).
  • Inspect the probe wire along its entire length for cuts, burn marks, or pinch points where the lid or hopper may have crushed it.
  • Remove the controller access panel and find the RTD sensor plug on the control board (often a 2‑wire connector). Make sure it is fully seated and not corroded.
  • If the wire insulation is damaged or the probe tip is loose, replace the RTD temperature probe assembly with an OEM Oklahoma Joe’s part.
  • Reconnect everything, restore power, and power on the grill. If ERR1 persists, the probe is likely open internally and must be replaced.

Warning: Do not bypass or short the RTD sensor; this can damage the control board and create unsafe temperature operation.
