Possible Causes

Broken RTD temperature probe, Disconnected RTD harness at controller, Damaged RTD wiring insulation, Failed temperature input on control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the grill before removing the controller or handling wiring.

  • Step 1 – Inspect RTD probe inside grill: Locate the metal temperature probe on the interior side wall. Check for physical damage, broken tip, or melted wire insulation.
  • Step 2 – Check RTD wiring path: Follow the RTD wires from the probe into the body and to the controller. Look for cuts, pinch points, or rodent damage. Repair minor insulation damage with high-temp heat-shrink or replace the probe assembly.
  • Step 3 – Verify connector at control board: Remove the controller from the front panel. Find the RTD sensor plug (usually a 2-wire connector). Ensure it is fully seated and not corroded. Reseat the connector.
  • Step 4 – Test continuity (optional but recommended): With the grill unplugged and RTD disconnected, use a multimeter set to ohms. A typical Pit Boss RTD should read roughly 1000–2000 Ω at room temperature (exact value varies by model). An open (OL) reading indicates a failed probe.
  • Step 5 – Replace faulty parts: If the RTD is open or physically damaged, replace the RTD temperature probe. If the RTD tests good but Er1 persists, replace the main control board.
