Possible Causes
RTD probe wires shorted together, Moisture inside RTD connector, Melted RTD cable contacting metal chassis, Failed temperature input on control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before inspecting wiring or the controller.
- Step 1 – Inspect RTD cable and probe: Look for melted insulation where the RTD cable passes near the firepot or exhaust. If copper conductors are exposed or touching metal, the probe is shorted and must be replaced.
- Step 2 – Check connector for moisture: Remove the controller and unplug the RTD connector. Look for condensation, grease, or corrosion. Dry the connector thoroughly and clean with electrical contact cleaner.
- Step 3 – Test resistance: With RTD disconnected, measure resistance across the two RTD leads. A reading near 0 Ω indicates a shorted probe. Replace the RTD temperature probe.
- Step 4 – Inspect control board: If a new RTD still gives Er2, the temperature input circuit on the main control board is likely damaged and the board should be replaced.
