Possible Causes
Failed hot rod igniter, Open igniter wiring harness, Blown igniter fuse on control board, Faulty main control board triac or relay
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the grill and allow the firepot area to cool completely before accessing the igniter.
- Step 1 – Visual inspection of igniter: Remove grates, drip tray, and heat baffle. Look into the firepot. The igniter should protrude slightly into the pot. Check for broken ceramic, heavy corrosion, or missing igniter tip.
- Step 2 – Check igniter wiring: From under the grill, locate the igniter wires leading from the firepot to the controller. Look for burns, cuts, or disconnected plugs. Reseat any loose connectors.
- Step 3 – Test igniter resistance: Disconnect the igniter from the harness. Use a multimeter to measure resistance across the igniter leads. Typical values are 40–80 Ω. An open (OL) reading indicates a failed igniter that must be replaced.
- Step 4 – Inspect control board fuse (if equipped): Some Pit Boss controllers have an internal fuse for the igniter circuit. Check and replace with the same rating if blown.
- Step 5 – Replace components: Install a new hot rod igniter if it tests open or is physically damaged. If the igniter tests good but Er3 persists, replace the main control board.
