Possible Causes
Grease fire in cook chamber, Excessive pellet feed causing runaway temperature, Failed RTD temperature probe reading too high, Faulty main control board temperature circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the grill from power and keep the lid closed if you suspect a grease fire. Do not use water on a grease fire. Use a fire extinguisher rated for grease or allow the fire to burn out with the lid closed.
- Step 1 – Let the unit cool completely: Wait until the grill body is cool to the touch before working on it.
- Step 2 – Inspect for grease fire damage: Remove grates and heat baffle. Check the barrel, drip tray, and grease channel for heavy grease buildup or burn marks. Clean all grease with a plastic scraper and degreaser. Ensure the grease bucket and drain are clear.
- Step 3 – Check RTD temperature probe: Locate the RTD probe on the inside wall of the cook chamber. Inspect for heavy carbon buildup, physical damage, or melted insulation on its wires. Gently clean the probe with fine steel wool or a Scotch-Brite pad. If the probe is bent, cracked, or wiring is brittle, replace the RTD temperature probe.
- Step 4 – Inspect wiring to control board: Remove the controller bezel. Verify the RTD sensor plug is fully seated on the control board and that no pins are corroded or burnt. Reseat the connector.
- Step 5 – Test operation: Plug the grill back in. Turn to Smoke or the lowest setting with an empty, clean firepot. Monitor temperature. If ErH reappears quickly with no real overheat, the RTD or control board is likely faulty.
- Step 6 – Replace components as needed: If cleaning and reseating do not help, replace the RTD temperature probe. If the issue persists, replace the main control board.
