Possible Causes

P-setting too high for ambient temperature, Insufficient pellet feed at idle, Strong wind or cold ambient temps, Heat loss through poorly sealed lid

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Note: P7 is a high P-setting that reduces pellet feed and increases smoke but can cause low temps.

  • Step 1 – Lower P-setting: In cold or windy weather, reduce the P-setting (e.g., from P7 to P3) to increase pellet feed and help maintain temperature.
  • Step 2 – Improve insulation: Use a Pit Boss thermal blanket if available and shield the grill from direct wind.
  • Step 3 – Check lid seal: Inspect the lid gasket (if equipped) and adjust hinges to ensure a good seal to reduce heat loss.
