Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Immediate safety: If you suspect a grease fire, keep the lid closed, unplug the grill, and keep a Class B fire extinguisher nearby. Do not use water on a grease fire.
Steps to address ER-3:
- Allow full cool-down: Leave the lid closed and let the grill cool completely. Do not restart until internal components are cool to the touch.
- Clean the cook chamber: Remove grates and drip pan. Scrape and remove built-up grease from the drip pan, drip tray, and bottom of the barrel. Empty and clean the grease bucket and drain channel.
- Inspect firepot: Remove the heat deflector and inspect the firepot for excessive ash or unburned pellets. Vacuum out ash with a metal-safe shop vac (grill unplugged and cold).
- Check RTD placement: Ensure the RTD probe is not bent into direct flame path or touching metal surfaces that could cause false high readings.
- Restart procedure: With everything clean and reassembled, plug in the grill, clear the error by cycling power, and start on a low setting (e.g., LO or 180°F). Monitor temperature rise to ensure it is controlled.
When to seek help: If ER-3 recurs without evidence of grease fire or overfeeding, the RTD or controller high-limit circuit may be faulty. Replace the RTD first; if the issue persists, contact Recteq for controller replacement.
