Possible Causes

RTD probe reading too low due to placement or failure, Excessive pellet feed from controller or stuck auger relay, Grease fire adding uncontrolled heat

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Immediate safety: If you suspect a grease fire, keep the lid closed, unplug the grill, and use a Class B fire extinguisher if flames escape. Do not use water.

Steps to address HI:

  • Allow cool-down: Leave the lid closed until the grill cools to a safe temperature. Do not open the lid during an active grease fire.
  • Inspect RTD probe: Once cool, check that the RTD is clean, not coated in thick carbon, and not bent into direct flame or touching metal surfaces. Clean gently with a non-abrasive pad.
  • Check for grease buildup: Remove grates and drip pan. Clean heavy grease from the drip tray, barrel bottom, and grease drain. Built-up grease can ignite and cause runaway temperatures.
  • Verify auger control: With the grill cool and empty, start a low-temp cook and observe pellet feed. If the auger runs continuously at low setpoints, the controller or auger relay may be stuck.
  • Test with empty cook chamber: Run the grill at a moderate setpoint (e.g., 250°F) with no food. Compare displayed temperature to an independent grill thermometer. Large discrepancies suggest RTD or controller calibration issues.
  • Replace RTD if needed: If the RTD is damaged or gives erratic readings, install a new Recteq-compatible RTD probe.

Warning: If the auger continues to feed uncontrollably or HI recurs after RTD replacement and cleaning, discontinue use and replace the controller. Uncontrolled heating is a fire hazard.
