Possible Causes
RTD probe coated in heavy grease, RTD probe placement affected by foil or accessories, Controller PID settings out of calibration (where adjustable)
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Allow the grill to cool before touching the RTD or interior surfaces.
Steps to improve temperature regulation:
- Clean RTD probe: Gently clean the RTD with a non-abrasive pad or cloth to remove baked-on grease and carbon. Do not bend or strike the probe.
- Check for obstructions: Ensure foil, pans, or accessories are not blocking airflow around the RTD or causing hot spots directly on the probe.
- Avoid frequent lid opening: Opening the lid often can cause the controller to overfeed pellets trying to recover, leading to overshoot.
- Controller settings: If your Recteq model allows PID or control adjustments, perform a factory reset or follow Recteq's tuning recommendations.
- Compare with external thermometer: Use a reliable grill thermometer to compare actual grate temperature with the display. If discrepancies remain large, consider replacing the RTD.
Note: Some temperature fluctuation is normal in pellet grills, but swings over 40–50°F after stabilization may indicate a sensor or control issue.
