Possible Causes

Dry or worn auger bushings, Failing auger gearbox, Bent auger shaft rubbing tube

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the grill before working near the auger. Do not reach into the hopper while the grill is powered.

Steps to address grinding noise:

  • Empty hopper: Remove pellets to expose the auger inlet and reduce load.
  • Run brief test: With the grill plugged in and hopper empty, start a feed test and listen closely to pinpoint the noise. Then unplug before disassembly.
  • Inspect auger alignment: Remove the auger motor and pull the auger. Check for bends or scoring on the auger shaft. Straighten or replace if bent.
  • Check bushings and tube: Inspect the auger bushings and tube for wear or deformation. Clean out debris and lightly polish rough spots.
  • Replace gearbox or motor: If the noise clearly comes from the gearbox and persists even with the auger removed, replace the auger motor/gearbox assembly.

Note: Do not lubricate the auger with standard oils or greases that can contaminate pellets. Use only manufacturer-approved dry lubricants if specified.
