Possible Causes

Burned-out hot rod igniter, Loose igniter connection at control board, Failed igniter relay on main control board, Damaged igniter wiring harness near fire pot

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the grill and ensure the fire pot is cool and free of burning pellets before working near the igniter.

Steps to troubleshoot:

  • Access the fire pot: Remove cooking grates, drip tray, and heat baffle to expose the fire pot. Look for the igniter tip protruding into the pot.
  • Inspect the igniter: Check for cracks, heavy corrosion, or a completely missing igniter tip. Inspect the wire where it passes through the firebox for heat damage.
  • Check wiring at control board: Remove the control panel and locate the igniter connector on the main control board. Ensure it is firmly seated and not burnt or discolored.
  • Test igniter resistance: Disconnect the igniter leads and measure resistance with a multimeter. A typical hot rod will show a finite resistance (often 30–200 Ω). An open circuit (OL) indicates a failed igniter.
  • Replace the igniter rod: If failed, remove the mounting screw or bracket holding the igniter tube, slide the old igniter out, and install a new Royal Gourmet-compatible hot rod igniter. Route the new wire away from the fire pot and secure with high-temp ties.
  • Check control board output (advanced): If the igniter tests good but Er3 persists, the igniter relay on the control board may be faulty. This typically requires replacing the main control board.
  • Reassemble and test: Reinstall internal components, plug in the grill, clear the error by cycling power, and run an ignition test. Confirm pellets ignite within a few minutes.
