Possible Causes
Pellet jam in auger tube, Swollen or wet pellets in hopper, Foreign object in hopper or auger, Seized auger motor on Royal Gourmet pellet feed system
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the grill before working on the auger or hopper. Wear gloves; sheet metal edges can be sharp.
Steps to clear jam:
- Empty the hopper: Scoop out pellets into a dry container. Check for clumps, sawdust, or foreign objects (screws, staples, etc.).
- Access the auger: Remove the rear or side access panel (depending on model) to expose the auger motor and tube. Disconnect the auger motor from the control board.
- Check for free movement: Attempt to rotate the auger shaft by hand (with motor removed if necessary). If it will not turn, there is a jam.
- Disassemble auger tube: Remove the bolts securing the auger motor and pull the auger shaft out of the tube. Clear compacted pellets and debris from the tube using a wooden dowel or brush.
- Inspect auger motor: Check the motor for signs of overheating or burnt smell. If the shaft is difficult to turn even when removed from the auger, the motor may be failing.
- Reassemble and test: Reinstall the auger shaft and motor, ensuring alignment with the fire pot. Reconnect wiring, refill hopper with fresh, dry pellets, and run a prime cycle to verify smooth feeding.
