Possible Causes

Grease fire in cook chamber, Failed high‑limit temperature switch, RTD probe misreading high temperature, Control board over‑feeding pellets

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: If you suspect a grease fire, keep the lid closed, turn the grill off, and unplug it. Do not open the lid until flames subside. Never use water on a grease fire.

  • 1. Inspect for grease fire damage: After the grill has cooled completely, open the lid and check for heavy soot, warped components, or burned wiring near the fire pot and drip tray. Clean out all grease and ash.
  • 2. Clean the fire pot and drip system: Remove the grates and drip tray. Vacuum ash from the fire pot and surrounding area. Scrape grease channels and the drip tray, and ensure the grease drain and bucket are clear.
  • 3. Check the high‑limit switch: Locate the high‑limit temperature switch (usually a small round or rectangular thermostat mounted near the fire pot or exhaust). Inspect wiring for heat damage. If the switch has a manual reset button, press it once after cooling. If it is deformed or cracked, replace it.
  • 4. Verify RTD probe placement: Ensure the RTD probe is firmly mounted and not touching the drip tray or directly above the fire pot where it can see excessive radiant heat. Reposition or replace if damaged.
  • 5. Control board check: If the grill repeatedly overshoots set temperature and triggers Er4 even after cleaning and inspection, the control board may be over‑feeding pellets. Inspect for burnt components on the board and consider replacement.
  • 6. Test run at low temperature: Start the grill at a low setpoint (e.g., 90–110°C / 200–225°F) and monitor. If temperature remains stable and Er4 does not reappear, gradually increase to normal cooking temps.
