Possible Causes
Burned out hot rod igniter, Loose igniter connection at control board, Blown igniter fuse on control board, Excess ash blocking airflow around igniter
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the grill and ensure the fire pot is cool. Do not touch the igniter until it has fully cooled from any previous attempt.
- 1. Clean the fire pot: Remove grates and drip tray. Vacuum all ash from the fire pot, especially around the igniter hole. Excess ash can insulate pellets from the igniter.
- 2. Visual check of igniter: Look into the fire pot at the igniter tip. It should protrude slightly into the pot. If it is recessed, bent, or missing, it must be repositioned or replaced.
- 3. Check wiring: Access the underside of the fire pot and locate the igniter wires leading to the control board. Ensure the plug is fully seated and wires are not burned or pinched.
- 4. Test igniter operation: With the fire pot empty, reassemble enough to run safely. Plug in the grill, start an ignition cycle, and look through the fire pot after 2–4 minutes. The igniter tip should glow red. If it stays dark, unplug the grill and proceed to replacement.
- 5. Replace igniter rod: Remove the retaining screw or bracket holding the igniter in the fire pot tube. Gently pull the igniter out from the underside, noting the routing of the wires. Install the new igniter in the same position so the tip sits correctly in the fire pot. Route wires away from hot surfaces and secure with high‑temp ties.
- 6. Check fuses (if accessible): Some Tepro control boards have an inline or board‑mounted fuse for the igniter circuit. Inspect and replace with the same rating if blown.
- 7. Test ignition: Reassemble, plug in, and start the grill. Confirm the igniter glows and pellets ignite within the normal time. The Er5 code should clear automatically.
