Possible Causes
RTD probe wire insulation melted and shorted to grill body, Moisture intrusion in RTD connector, Pinched RTD cable in lid or side panel, Failed RTD sensor element
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF and unplug the grill. Allow it to cool fully before touching internal components.
- Visually inspect the RTD cable: Look for melted insulation where the cable passes near the firepot, exhaust, or burner box. Any exposed conductor can cause a short.
- Check for pinched points: Open and close the lid while watching the RTD cable path. Ensure it is not being pinched by the lid hinge or side shelf brackets.
- Dry and clean connectors: If the grill was exposed to heavy rain or washing, disconnect the RTD plug at the control board and dry it thoroughly. Use compressed air and electrical contact cleaner if available.
- Measure resistance: With a multimeter, check the RTD resistance at room temperature. A reading near 0 ohms or wildly out of spec indicates a shorted or failed probe.
- Replace the RTD assembly: If damage or a short is confirmed, install a new Timberwolf RTD Temperature Probe Assembly, securing the cable with high-temp zip ties away from hot surfaces.
- Reset and test: Reconnect power, clear the error by cycling the main power switch, and run a low-temperature test cook to verify stable readings.
