Possible Causes
Broken RTD probe element, Disconnected RTD plug at controller, Severed RTD wiring, Corroded RTD connector
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the grill and let it cool completely before working inside the hopper or control area.
- 1. Check RTD connection:
- Locate the RTD probe wire entering the hopper and connecting to the controller.
- Ensure the plug is fully seated and not partially pulled out.
- Disconnect and reconnect the plug several times to clean contacts.
- 2. Inspect RTD cable:
- Follow the RTD cable along the cook chamber wall.
- Look for cuts, crushed spots, or melted insulation from contact with hot surfaces.
- 3. Test RTD with multimeter:
- With the RTD unplugged, measure resistance across its two leads.
- An open circuit (OL or infinite resistance) confirms a failed RTD.
- 4. Replace RTD probe:
- Remove the mounting screw or nut holding the RTD to the cook chamber.
- Pull the old probe and wire out carefully.
- Install the new Traeger RTD temperature probe, routing the wire away from direct flame and sharp edges.
- Reconnect to the controller and test.
