Possible Causes
Grease fire in cook chamber, Excessive pellet feed causing runaway temperature, Faulty RTD reading too high, Controller calibration error
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If you suspect a grease fire, keep the lid closed, turn the grill OFF, and unplug it. Do not open the lid until flames subside. Keep a Class B fire extinguisher nearby.
- 1. Allow grill to cool completely:
- Leave the lid closed until the grill is cool to the touch.
- 2. Clean out grease and ash:
- Remove grates, drip tray, and heat baffle.
- Vacuum ash from the firepot and bottom of the barrel.
- Scrape heavy grease from drip tray and interior surfaces.
- 3. Inspect RTD probe:
- Check that the RTD is not coated in heavy grease or soot, which can cause false readings.
- Wipe the probe gently with a damp cloth.
- 4. Restart procedure:
- With the grill clean and cool, plug it back in.
- Start on SMOKE or lowest setting and monitor temperature rise.
- 5. If Er4 recurs at normal temps:
- Test or replace the RTD probe.
- If a new RTD does not resolve it, the controller may be misreading and should be replaced.
