Possible Causes
Burned-out hot rod, Loose hot rod connector, Open hot rod circuit, Controller not powering igniter
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the grill and ensure the firepot is cool before working on the igniter.
- 1. Confirm pellets and fan:
- Verify pellets are feeding into the firepot and the fan is running during startup.
- If pellets and airflow are present but no ignition, suspect the hot rod.
- 2. Test hot rod:
- Access the hot rod connector under the hopper or barrel.
- Disconnect and measure resistance across the hot rod leads (expect ~40–60 ohms).
- Open circuit indicates a failed igniter.
- 3. Replace hot rod:
- Remove grates, drip tray, and heat baffle.
- Remove firepot screws and lift the firepot to expose the hot rod.
- Slide out the old hot rod and install a new Traeger hot rod igniter.
- Route wires away from the firepot and secure with high-temp ties if needed.
- 4. Test ignition:
- Reassemble the interior components.
- Start the grill and verify that pellets ignite within 4–7 minutes.
