Possible Causes
Grease fire in cookbox, Excessive pellet feed due to stuck auger relay, Faulty RTD temperature probe reading low, Lid left open then closed with large fuel load
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If you suspect a grease fire, do not open the lid fully. Turn the grill off, unplug it, and keep the lid closed until the fire subsides. Have a Class B fire extinguisher nearby. Never use water on a grease fire.
- Allow full cool-down: Leave the grill off and closed until it is completely cool to the touch before inspecting.
- Clean grease and ash: Remove grates and heat baffles. Scrape and remove built-up grease from the drip tray, grease channel, and cookbox. Empty and clean the grease tray and bucket. Vacuum ash from the fire pot and surrounding area.
- Inspect RTD temperature probe: Locate the temperature sensor (usually a metal rod on the interior side wall). Check for heavy carbon buildup, physical damage, or loose mounting. Clean gently with a non-abrasive pad.
- Check probe wiring: Follow the probe wires to the control board. Ensure the connector is secure and wires are not pinched or melted.
- Test probe (if possible): With a multimeter, measure resistance at room temperature and compare to Weber’s RTD spec (commonly around 1000Ω at 0°C for PT1000-type, but verify for your model). A shorted or open probe will cause incorrect readings and may trigger E3.
- Inspect control board: Look for signs of a stuck auger relay (burn marks, melted plastic). If pellets continue to feed when the grill is off, unplug immediately and replace the control board.
- After cleaning and checks: Restart the grill with a small pellet load and monitor temperature closely. If E3 recurs, replace the RTD temperature probe first; if still unresolved, replace the control board.
