Possible Causes

Failed combustion fan motor, Obstructed fan blades, Loose fan wiring connector, Faulty fan driver circuit on control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the grill before accessing the fan. Ensure the grill is cool.

  • Listen for fan at startup: Plug in and start the grill. During ignition, you should hear the combustion fan running. If E4 appears and there is no fan noise, suspect a fan or control issue.
  • Inspect fan area: Remove the side or rear access panel to expose the combustion fan assembly. Check for debris, grease, or ash blocking the fan blades.
  • Spin test: With power disconnected, gently spin the fan blades by hand. They should rotate freely without grinding. If stiff or seized, replace the fan motor assembly.
  • Check wiring: Confirm the fan’s connector is firmly seated on the control board and that wires are intact and not heat-damaged.
  • Voltage test (advanced): With extreme caution and the grill plugged in, start a cycle and measure voltage at the fan connector (use insulated probes). If rated voltage is present but the fan does not run, the fan motor is defective. If no voltage is present, the control board is likely faulty.
  • Replace faulty component: Remove mounting screws, swap in a new Weber-compatible combustion fan, route wires away from hot surfaces, and secure all panels. If the fan tests good but never receives power, replace the control board.
