Possible Causes

Damaged RTD temperature probe, Broken or shorted RTD wiring harness, Loose RTD connector at control board, Faulty temperature input on control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the grill before inspecting wiring or replacing the probe.

  • Visual inspection of probe: Locate the RTD probe inside the cookbox (usually a metal rod on the side wall). Check for physical damage, melted insulation, or corrosion at the mounting point.
  • Check wiring path: Follow the RTD cable from the probe into the cabinet and to the control board. Look for pinched, cut, or melted sections, especially where the cable passes near the firebox.
  • Verify connectors: Ensure the RTD plug is fully seated on the control board. Disconnect and reconnect to clean contacts.
  • Resistance test: With the grill unplugged, disconnect the RTD from the board and measure resistance across the two probe leads. Compare to Weber’s spec for your model at room temperature. An open circuit (OL) or near-zero ohms indicates a failed probe or shorted wiring.
  • Replace RTD if faulty: Remove the mounting screw or nut holding the probe, pull the cable through the wall grommet, and install the new Weber-compatible RTD. Route the cable along the original path and secure away from hot surfaces.
  • If RTD tests good: The control board’s sensor input may be defective. In that case, replace the control board following manufacturer instructions.
