Possible Causes
RTD temperature probe wires shorted together, Moisture inside RTD connector, Damaged RTD cable insulation contacting metal chassis, Control board RTD circuit failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power to the Yoder smoker and let it cool completely before inspection.
- Inspect RTD cable routing: Follow the RTD probe cable from the cook chamber to the controller. Ensure the cable is not pinched between panels or rubbed through where it passes through the body. Look for bare copper or melted insulation.
- Check for moisture: Open the controller housing and inspect the RTD connector for moisture, grease, or debris. Dry the area thoroughly and clean with electrical contact cleaner if needed.
- Isolate the short: Unplug the RTD from the control board and visually inspect the probe end inside the cook chamber. If the probe sheath is cracked or the cable is frayed, replace the RTD temperature probe.
- Test with multimeter: With the RTD disconnected, measure resistance between each RTD lead and the metal body of the grill. Any continuity indicates a short to ground and the probe/cable must be replaced.
- Controller evaluation: If a known-good RTD probe still results in ERR2, the main control board RTD circuit may be shorted internally and the controller should be replaced.
