Possible Causes
Pellet jam in auger tube, Swollen or wet pellets binding auger, Foreign object in hopper or auger, Auger motor overheating or failing
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the grill and allow it to cool. Do not attempt to clear an auger jam with the unit plugged in.
- Empty hopper: Remove all pellets from the hopper. Scoop out remaining pellets and vacuum fines and dust from the bottom.
- Check for foreign objects: Inspect the hopper and visible auger intake for screws, tools, or other debris that may have fallen in. Remove any obstruction.
- Access auger: Remove the access panel covering the auger motor and auger shaft (typically at the rear or side of the hopper). Note wiring connections before disconnecting.
- Manually rotate auger: With the motor disconnected from power, attempt to turn the auger shaft by hand or with pliers at the motor coupling. If it will not turn, the auger is jammed.
- Clear jam: Remove the auger motor and slide the auger shaft out of the tube. Scrape out compacted pellets and sawdust. If pellets are swollen or damp, thoroughly clean and dry the tube before reassembly.
- Inspect auger motor: Check the motor for signs of overheating (burnt smell, discoloration). If the motor is seized or noisy when powered, replace the auger motor.
- Reassemble and test: Reinstall the auger, motor, and access panel. Refill with fresh, dry pellets and test operation. If ERR5 returns immediately, the controller's auger output may be faulty.
