Possible Causes
Grease fire in cook chamber, Excessive pellet feed causing runaway temperature, RTD probe misreading due to direct flame, Controller calibration error
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If you suspect a grease fire, keep the lid closed, unplug the grill, and use a Class K or multipurpose fire extinguisher if flames escape. Never use water on a grease fire.
- Allow to cool: Do not open the lid until the grill has cooled significantly. Opening during a grease fire can introduce oxygen and worsen the fire.
- Inspect interior: Once cool, remove grates and diffuser. Check for heavy grease buildup and signs of flare-ups. Clean all grease from the drip tray, diffuser, and bottom of the cook chamber.
- Check pellet feed: Ensure the auger is not overfeeding pellets due to a stuck relay or incorrect controller setting. Observe startup to confirm normal pellet feed intervals.
- Verify RTD placement: Make sure the RTD probe is not bent into the direct flame path. Replace if damaged.
- Restart cautiously: After cleaning and inspection, restart the grill at a moderate temperature and monitor closely. If HERR recurs without obvious cause, the controller may require replacement or calibration by Yoder support.
