Possible Causes
RTD temperature sensor harness unplugged, RTD probe wire broken, Corroded RTD connector at control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the Z Grills pellet grill from power and allow it to cool completely before working near the firepot or wiring.
Steps to check and fix:
- Inspect the RTD probe: Locate the RTD temperature probe inside the cooking chamber (usually a small metal rod on the side wall). Check that the probe is not physically broken or bent.
- Check the RTD wiring: Follow the RTD wires from inside the grill through the body to the control panel. Look for cuts, melted insulation, or pinched sections.
- Verify connectors: Remove the control panel (usually a few screws). Find the RTD connector on the control board and ensure it is fully seated and free of corrosion or moisture. Reseat the connector several times.
- Test continuity (optional but recommended): Using a multimeter set to resistance (ohms), disconnect the RTD from the board and measure across the two RTD leads. A typical RTD for Z Grills will show a finite resistance (often 100–2000 Ω depending on type and temperature). If it reads open (OL), the probe is bad.
- Replace if faulty: If the probe or wiring is damaged or open, replace the RTD temperature sensor with a compatible Z Grills part. Route the new wire away from hot surfaces and moving parts, then reconnect to the control board.
- Power up and test: Reinstall the control panel, plug the grill back in, and power on. Confirm that Er1 is cleared and that the temperature reading appears on the display.
