Possible Causes
RTD probe wires shorted together, RTD cable insulation melted against firebox, Moisture inside RTD connector at control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power and let the grill cool completely before opening panels.
Steps to diagnose and correct:
- Inspect RTD cable routing: Trace the RTD cable from the probe inside the cook chamber to the control box. Look for areas where the cable may have touched the hot barrel or firebox and melted.
- Check for shorts: If the insulation is melted or worn through, the two conductors may be touching or contacting the metal body. Gently separate any fused sections and visually confirm if copper is exposed.
- Dry and clean connectors: Remove the RTD connector from the control board. If there is grease or moisture, clean with electrical contact cleaner and allow to dry fully.
- Test with a multimeter: With the RTD disconnected, measure resistance across the two RTD pins. A reading near 0 Ω indicates a short. Flex the cable slightly while measuring to see if the short is intermittent.
- Replace damaged parts: If the cable is shorted or the probe is physically damaged, replace the RTD temperature sensor probe. Route the new cable away from hot surfaces and secure it with high-temperature zip ties or clips.
- Reassemble and test: Reconnect the RTD to the control board, reinstall the control panel, restore power, and verify that Er2 is cleared and temperature readings are stable.
