Possible Causes

Igniter hot rod burned out, Loose igniter connection at control board, Blown igniter fuse on control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the grill and ensure the firepot is cool and free of active embers before working near the igniter.

Steps to troubleshoot:

  • Access the firepot: Remove cooking grates, drip tray, and heat baffle to expose the firepot. Inspect the igniter tip inside the firepot for heavy carbon buildup or physical damage.
  • Check wiring: From underneath or behind the grill, locate the igniter wires going to the control box. Ensure the connector is fully seated on the control board and that the wires are not cut or melted.
  • Test the igniter: Disconnect the igniter from the board. Using a multimeter set to resistance, measure across the igniter leads. A typical hot rod will show a finite resistance (often 40–80 Ω). If it reads open (OL), the igniter is burned out.
  • Inspect fuses: Some Z Grills control boards have an inline or onboard fuse for the igniter circuit. With power disconnected, visually inspect and replace any blown fuse with the same rating.
  • Replace igniter if needed: Remove the mounting screw(s) holding the igniter in place. Slide the old igniter out of the firepot tube and install a new igniter (hot rod), ensuring the tip protrudes slightly into the firepot. Route the wire away from hot surfaces.
  • Reassemble and test: Reinstall the heat baffle, drip tray, and grates. Plug the grill in, start an ignition cycle, and confirm that the Er3 code is gone and pellets ignite within a few minutes.
