Exposure to moisture and humidity, Lack of seasoning or protective oil on grates, Damaged high-temperature paint on interior surfaces
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Work on a cool grill. Wear gloves and eye protection when using wire brushes.
Steps to remediate:
- Remove rust: Use a grill brush or fine steel wool to remove surface rust from grates and interior surfaces.
- Clean thoroughly: Wipe down with a damp cloth and dry completely.
- Season grates: Apply a thin coat of high-smoke-point cooking oil to the grates and run the grill at 350–400°F for 30–45 minutes.
- Touch up paint (if applicable): For exterior or non-food-contact areas, use high-temperature grill paint to cover bare metal.
- Prevent future rust: Store the grill under a Z Grills grill cover and avoid leaving wet ash in the firepot.
