Possible Causes
Thermostat sensor located in hot spot, Poor water flow causing rapid temperature rise, Oversized heater for small body of water, Intermittent safety switch opening
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power before moving sensors or opening panels.
- Check water flow: Ensure pump is running at correct speed and filter is clean. Low flow can cause rapid temperature spikes at the heater outlet.
- Verify sensor placement: Make sure the water temperature sensor is in the main circulation line, not in a dead leg or too close to the heater outlet.
- Observe operation: Watch the heater as it runs to see if the flame or compressor stops while the call for heat is still present; this can indicate a safety device opening.
If short cycling continues, a technician should check limit switches, flow rates, and system sizing.
