Possible Causes

Failed Fafco valve actuator motor, Stripped actuator gears, Jammed diverter valve, Incorrect actuator wiring to controller

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power to the Fafco controller and pump before working on the valve actuator or plumbing.

  • Check manual operation: Remove the actuator from the valve body (usually by loosening a few screws). Manually turn the valve stem with a wrench or handle. It should rotate smoothly 90°. If it binds, the valve body is jammed and must be serviced or replaced.
  • Inspect actuator: With the actuator removed, gently rotate the output shaft by hand. Grinding or free-spinning may indicate stripped gears.
  • Verify wiring: Open the actuator cover and confirm that the common, open, and close wires are correctly connected to the Fafco controller terminals per the wiring diagram.
  • Test movement: Restore power and command solar ON/OFF while watching the actuator (off the valve). If it does not move or only hums, the motor or internal limit switches are likely failed.
  • Replace actuator if needed: Install a Fafco-compatible solar valve actuator, align it with the valve stem in the correct position, and secure with screws. Reconnect wiring and test full travel.
