Possible Causes
Dirty or misaligned igniter, Failed hot surface igniter, Faulty flame sensor, Low gas pressure or gas valve not opening
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn off power at the breaker and shut off the gas supply before opening the heater. Allow the unit to cool completely.
- Check gas supply: Verify the gas valve feeding the Hayward heater is fully open. If other gas appliances are weak, contact your gas supplier.
- Inspect the igniter: Remove the front panel, locate the hot surface igniter (usually near the burner tray). Look for cracks, white spots, or breaks in the element. If damaged, replace the igniter with a Hayward-compatible part.
- Clean the flame sensor: The flame sensor rod sits in the burner flame. Gently clean it with fine steel wool or emery cloth to remove oxidation, then reinstall firmly.
- Check wiring connections: Inspect the harness to the ignition control module, igniter, and gas valve for loose or corroded connectors. Reseat all plugs.
- Reset and test: Restore power and gas, clear any lockout per the manual (often by cycling power), then call for heat and observe ignition. If IF returns, a professional should check gas pressure and ignition control.
