Possible Causes

Dirty flame sensor, Faulty flame rectification circuit on control board, Poor burner ground, Low gas pressure causing weak flame

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power and gas before servicing. Allow the heater to cool.

  • Locate and clean the flame sensor: The flame sensor is usually a small metal rod near the burner flame. Remove the mounting screw, gently pull it out, and clean the rod with fine steel wool or a Scotch-Brite pad to remove oxidation. Do not sand aggressively.
  • Inspect wiring and ground: Check the flame sensor wire back to the control board for damage or loose connections. Verify the heater chassis is properly grounded and that the burner tray has a solid metal-to-metal contact with the chassis.
  • Check burner flame quality: After reassembly, restore power and gas, then observe the flame through the sight glass. Flames should be stable and mostly blue. Yellow, lifting, or noisy flames may indicate gas pressure or orifice issues that require a technician.
  • Control board check: If the sensor is clean and wiring is good but E02 persists, the ignition control or main control board may not be reading flame current correctly and should be tested or replaced by a qualified technician.
