Possible Causes
Restricted water flow through heater, Scale buildup in heat exchanger, Stuck or failed outlet high limit switch, Pump running at too low speed
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power and allow the heater and plumbing to cool. Do not touch hot metal surfaces.
- Check flow rate: Ensure the pool pump is set to an adequate speed for heating. Increase RPM on variable-speed pumps when the heater is running.
- Clean filter and baskets: Backwash or clean the filter and empty all baskets to restore full flow.
- Inspect bypass valves: Confirm that any manual or automatic bypass around the heater is correctly adjusted per Poolworld guidelines. Too much bypass can cause localized overheating.
- Examine high limit switch: Locate the outlet high limit switch on the header. Check for loose wires and signs of overheating. Reseat connectors.
- Descale if needed: If the heater is older or used with hard water, internal scale may be restricting flow. A professional chemical descaling of the heat exchanger may be required.
Warning: Repeated outlet overheat conditions can crack the heat exchanger. Address flow and scaling issues promptly.
