Display shows 'SPK' and heater repeatedly sparks without establishing flame.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and gas. Ignition components operate at high voltage.
Steps to address SPK error:
- Inspect spark electrode: Remove the electrode assembly and check for cracks in the ceramic, carbon buildup, or damage to the tip.
- Clean and adjust gap: Gently clean the electrode tip with fine abrasive pad. Set the spark gap to Raypak’s specified distance (often around 1/8–3/16 inch) and ensure proper positioning in the burner flame path.
- Check grounding: Confirm that the burner tray and ignition module share a solid ground connection. Tighten mounting screws and clean any rust at contact points.
- Inspect ignition cable: Look for cracks or burn marks on the high‑voltage lead from the module to the electrode. Replace if damaged.
- If sparking continues without flame: Gas supply or gas valve issues may be present. Have a qualified technician verify gas pressures and valve operation.
Note: Repeated sparking without ignition can flood the combustion chamber with gas; always allow time for ventilation between attempts.
