Possible Causes
Failed outlet temperature sensor (thermistor), Loose or corroded sensor wiring, Control board reading out of range
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn off power to the heater before accessing internal components.
- Locate outlet sensor: The outlet water temperature sensor is typically threaded into the outlet header or manifold. Refer to your Rheem model diagram.
- Inspect wiring: Check the sensor harness for damage, corrosion at the connector, or loose pins. Clean contacts and reseat firmly.
- Check sensor resistance: With power off and wires disconnected, measure the sensor resistance with a multimeter and compare to Rheem's temperature/resistance chart. If readings are far out of range, replace the sensor.
- Replace sensor if needed: Drain water from the heater header if required, remove the old sensor, apply thread sealant approved for potable water, and install the new Rheem outlet temperature sensor.
