Possible Causes
Open or shorted gas valve coil, Loose gas valve wiring, Faulty ignition control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn off power and shut off gas. Work on gas components only if you are qualified; otherwise contact a licensed technician.
- Inspect wiring: Check the harness from the ignition control to the gas valve. Look for loose connectors, damaged insulation, or burn marks. Repair or replace damaged wiring.
- Check gas valve coil resistance: With power off and wires disconnected, measure resistance across the gas valve terminals. Compare to Rheem specifications. If open or shorted, replace the gas valve.
- Verify proper grounding: Ensure the control board and gas valve share a solid ground connection to the chassis.
- Replace gas valve if defective: Install a Rheem-approved gas valve, using proper pipe sealant and leak testing all joints with a soap solution after installation.
