Possible Causes
Faulty hot surface igniter or spark igniter, Igniter wiring harness damage, No gas flow to burner, Defective SmartPool ignition control module
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and gas before inspection. Allow the heater to cool.
- Listen for ignition sequence: Restore power and call for heat. You should hear the inducer or blower (if equipped), then a click or glow from the igniter, then gas flow. If you do not hear or see ignition, proceed.
- Inspect igniter: Remove the burner access panel and locate the igniter (spark electrode or hot surface igniter). Look for cracks, chips, or heavy scaling. Do not touch the element with bare fingers.
- Check wiring: Verify the igniter harness is firmly connected to the SmartPool ignition control board and not pinched or burned.
- Reset lockout: Turn power off for 60 seconds, then back on to clear SPF3. Try again. If the code returns, the igniter or ignition control module likely needs replacement.
- Gas verification: Confirm the manual gas shutoff is open. If you suspect no gas supply or smell gas continuously, shut off the heater and call a licensed gas technician.
