Possible Causes
Dirty or misaligned igniter, Failed hot surface igniter, Faulty flame sensor, Low gas supply pressure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker and shut off the gas supply valve before opening the heater. Allow the unit to cool completely.
- Check gas supply: Verify the gas valve to the Sta-Rite heater is fully open and that other gas appliances are working. If gas supply is questionable, contact your gas utility or a licensed gas technician.
- Inspect the hot surface igniter: Remove the front panel, locate the igniter assembly near the burner tray, and visually inspect for cracks, chips, or white spots. If damaged, replace the Sta-Rite hot surface igniter.
- Clean the flame sensor: The flame sensor is usually integrated with or adjacent to the igniter. Gently clean the metal rod with fine emery cloth or a Scotch-Brite pad to remove oxidation. Do not sand aggressively.
- Check wiring connections: Inspect the igniter and flame sensor harness for loose plugs, burnt connectors, or damaged insulation. Reseat all connectors firmly on the ignition control board.
- Reset and test: Restore power and gas, clear the error by cycling power, and call for heat. If E01 returns after cleaning and inspection, the ignition control module or hot surface igniter likely needs replacement.
