Possible Causes
Unstable gas pressure, Dirty burner orifices, Faulty flame sensor, Faulty gas valve
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety warning: Turn off electrical power and close the gas shutoff valve before servicing. Work in a well-ventilated outdoor area.
- Verify gas pressure and supply: Ensure the gas shutoff valve to the Sta-Rite heater is fully open. If other gas appliances are also dropping out, contact a gas professional to check line pressure.
- Inspect burners: Remove the burner tray assembly and check for rust, spider webs, or debris in the burner ports and orifices. Clean with a soft brush and compressed air. Do not enlarge orifices.
- Clean flame sensor: Remove the flame sensor rod and gently clean it with fine abrasive pad to remove oxidation. Reinstall and ensure it is properly positioned in the burner flame.
- Check gas valve wiring: Confirm the gas valve harness is firmly connected to the ignition control board and valve terminals. Look for heat-damaged or brittle wires.
- Test operation: Restore gas and power, then call for heat. If E02 persists, the flame sensor or gas valve assembly may require replacement by a qualified technician.
