Heater ignites with a loud boom or puff, sometimes blowing soot or flame out of the front

Critical safety: Turn off gas and power immediately. Do not continue operating a heater with delayed ignition.

• Inspect burners: Remove the burner tray and thoroughly clean all burners and ports. Replace any warped or severely corroded burners.
• Check igniter position: Ensure the Sta-Rite hot surface igniter is correctly positioned relative to the burner per the service manual.
• Have gas pressure checked: A licensed technician must verify that inlet and manifold pressures are within Sta-Rite specifications.
• Replace weak igniter: If the igniter glows dimly or slowly, replace it to ensure prompt ignition.
