Possible Causes
Cracked heat exchanger, Leaking manifold O-rings, Loose union fittings, Corroded header
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power and close the water valves to the heater. Allow the system to depressurize before opening any plumbing.
- Identify leak source: Remove the front and side panels of the Sta-Rite heater and use a flashlight to trace the leak to its origin (manifold, unions, exchanger).
- Check unions and fittings: Tighten inlet and outlet unions slightly; do not overtighten plastic fittings. Replace any cracked unions.
- Inspect manifold O-rings: Look for drips at the manifold/header joints. Replace Sta-Rite manifold O-rings if hardened or flattened.
- Evaluate heat exchanger: If water is leaking from the exchanger body or tubes, the Sta-Rite heat exchanger is likely cracked and must be replaced.
