Possible Causes

Dirty flame sensor, Poor burner grounding, Blocked burner orifices, Faulty ignition control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power and gas before removing panels. Allow the heater to cool.

  • Clean the flame sensor: Remove the flame sensor from the burner assembly. Lightly polish the metal rod with fine steel wool to remove oxidation. Reinstall ensuring the ceramic insulator is not cracked.
  • Check burner cleanliness: Remove the burner tray from the SunHeater unit. Use compressed air or a soft brush to clear dust, rust flakes, or spider webs from burner ports and orifices. Do not enlarge the orifices.
  • Verify ground connections: Confirm the burner tray and gas valve manifold have solid metal-to-metal contact with the chassis. Tighten any loose ground screws. A poor ground can prevent the control from sensing flame.
  • Inspect wiring to flame sensor: Follow the flame sensor lead back to the Ignition Control Board. Ensure the connector is tight and the wire insulation is intact.
  • Test operation: Restore gas and power, then call for heat. If the burners light but the heater still trips to E02 within a few seconds, the ignition control board may not be reading the flame signal and may need replacement.

Note: If you are not comfortable working around gas burners, have a licensed pool heater technician perform these checks.
