Possible Causes

Shorted flame sensor to ground, Broken flame sensor wire, Contaminated flame rod, Faulty ignition control board flame circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power and gas before servicing ignition components.

  • Inspect flame sensor lead: Follow the wire from the flame sensor to the ignition control board. Look for insulation damage, pinched sections, or contact with metal surfaces that could cause a short.
  • Clean flame sensor: Remove the sensor and gently clean the rod with fine abrasive pad to remove soot and oxidation. Do not bend the rod.
  • Check mounting: Ensure the sensor is properly positioned in the burner flame path and securely mounted with clean contact to the burner bracket.
  • Test continuity: With power off, verify continuity of the flame sensor wire from the rod terminal to the board connector. Repair or replace damaged wiring.
  • Board evaluation: If wiring and sensor are good but E11 persists, the ignition control board's flame sense circuit may be defective and require replacement.
