Possible Causes
Worn or cracked ceramic/carbon seal faces, Dry-running pump causing seal overheating, Improper seal installation during previous repair, Chemical damage from aggressive water balance
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF power and close suction and return valves before disassembling the pump. Allow the motor to cool.
- Disassemble wet end: Remove the pump housing from the AO Smith motor by taking out the through-bolts. Remove the impeller to access the shaft seal.
- Inspect seal: Examine both halves of the mechanical seal (rotating and stationary). Look for cracks, chips, or scoring.
- Replace seal: Install a new seal kit specified for your pump model. Do not touch the polished seal faces with bare fingers; use clean gloves.
- Check for shaft damage: Inspect the motor shaft where the seal rides. If it is grooved or corroded, the motor shaft or sleeve may need replacement.
- Reassemble and test: Reassemble the pump, prime it, and run while checking for leaks.
