Possible Causes
Tripped breaker or GFCI, Failed timer or automation relay, Loose wire at motor terminal block, Open thermal overload inside motor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Always turn OFF the breaker before tightening or moving wires.
- Check breakers and GFCI: Inspect the pool equipment breaker and any GFCI outlets or breakers. Reset if tripped and observe if they trip again.
- Verify voltage at motor: Using a multimeter, confirm that rated voltage is present at the AO Smith motor terminals when the timer or switch is calling for operation.
- Inspect timer/relay: If no voltage reaches the motor, check the mechanical timer, digital controller, or automation relay for burned contacts or miswiring.
- Tighten connections: With power OFF, tighten all terminal screws at the motor and in the control box. Look for burned or broken conductors.
- Thermal overload: Some motors have an internal thermal protector that resets after cooling. Allow the motor to cool for 30–60 minutes and try again. If it repeatedly fails to start, internal damage is likely.
