Possible Causes
Incoming supply voltage above rated 230V, Incorrect wiring (e.g., 277V feed on 230V pump), Loose neutral or ground in service panel causing voltage imbalance, Faulty transformer or utility overvoltage condition
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety Warning: High voltage can cause severe injury or death. Only qualified personnel should measure or adjust line voltage.
- Confirm nameplate rating: Check the AO Smith pump motor label for required voltage (commonly 230V). Ensure the circuit feeding the pump matches this rating.
- Measure line voltage: With power ON, a qualified person should measure voltage at the pump terminals. If it exceeds the rated voltage by more than ~10%, the pump will protect itself with ERR2.
- Check for miswiring: Turn power OFF. Verify the pump is not accidentally connected to a 277V or 3-phase source. Correct any miswiring immediately.
- Inspect service panel: Have an electrician check for loose neutral/ground connections or panel issues that could cause voltage spikes.
- Reset and monitor: After correcting the supply, restore power and clear the error by cycling power or pressing reset. If ERR2 returns with proper voltage, the internal control board voltage-sensing circuit may be defective.
