Possible Causes

Impeller jammed with debris or foreign object, Mechanical binding between impeller and diffuser, Severely worn or rusted motor bearings, Misaligned pump seal plate causing rotor drag

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Disconnect power at the breaker before opening the pump or touching the shaft.

  • Open pump housing: Remove the pump lid and strainer basket. Check for stones, plastic, or other debris lodged near the impeller eye.
  • Check impeller rotation: Remove the rear motor cover and attempt to rotate the shaft or fan by hand. If it will not turn or feels gritty, there is a mechanical bind.
  • Disassemble wet end: Separate the motor from the pump housing (volute) by removing the through-bolts. Inspect the impeller, diffuser, and seal plate for warping, cracks, or rubbing marks.
  • Clear obstructions and reassemble: Remove any debris, replace damaged diffuser or seal plate, and ensure the impeller spins freely before reassembly.
  • Replace bearings or motor: If the shaft is stiff even with the pump wet end removed, the motor bearings are likely seized and the motor assembly should be rebuilt or replaced.
